A rural grassroots official from Chongqing in southwest China has gone viral by stepping out of the office and into the fields. He has swapped meetings for livestreaming local produce, helping villagers to raise incomes and drive rural revitalization. Our reporter Gong Ming has the story.
The young man confidently livestreaming local farm products isn't a social media influencer — he's the Party Secretary of Taiping village in Chongqing's Tongnan District. In 2020, after a successful career, Wen Chunlai returned to his hometown and was elected to lead the village of more than 800 households. He faced the challenges of idle farmland and an economy left behind as many young people moved away for work.
WEN CHUNLAI, Party Secretary of Taiping Village "At first, I didn't have a clear plan, only the idea of developing local industries. I used to think this job meant sitting in an office, handling paperwork and going to meetings. But I quickly realized there's no time for that. Every day, I'm out doing all sorts of things, keeping myself busy and finding ways to get things done."
In the past few years, Wen has led a team of young officials to consolidate and upgrade idle land for mechanized farming. He encouraged villagers to grow soybeans and rapeseed suited to local conditions. To find markets, he picked up his phone, shot short videos showing rural life and production, and used down-to-earth livestreams to attract followers. In June, over 5,000 kilograms of local rapeseed oil were sold out within just a few days.
WEN CHUNLAI, Party Secretary of Taiping Village "I can use online platforms like this to promote my hometown. It helps me sell our farm products, but also share the stories and culture of our village. A lot of people are getting to know me and Taiping Village this way, which lays the groundwork for future development. At the heart of it, I'm doing this to help farmers and help villagers prosper together."
XIA QUBI, Villager "Secretary Wen often visits us at home and checks on our situation. Every year we get extra dividends from land leases and farm product sales."
Under Wen Chunlai's leadership, the village has built 31 kilometers of new roads to improve transportation and developed industries including soybeans, corn and rapeseed production. These initiatives have driven collective growth in the village's grain and oil sector. Village income soared nearly sevenfold from 2021 to 2024, surpassing 1 million yuan, or about 150,000 US dollars.
GAO XIANGKUN, Villager "Our village has changed a lot. Every household now has road access. The village leaders helped us develop the land, plant crops — it's getting better and better."
Wen is also sharpening his skills. He's joined Tongnan District's "village livestreamer" training program and even participated in a short-drama series to promote local products. His story reflects a new kind of grassroots leadership: innovative, hands-on, and committed to drive rural revitalization and improve villagers' lives.
